Book February 21, 2008

So Tom tagged me with this book meme, and I’m very grateful that I was sat near the featured book as opposed to my Dad’s Star Trek novel I had been close to whilst sat downstairs.

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five other people.

The three sentences are:

‘Muggles are pulling the flush and instead of everything disappearing – well, you can imagine. The poor things keep calling those – pumbles, I think they’re called – you know, the ones who mend pipes and things.’

‘Plumbers?’

‘Exactly, yes, but of course they’re flummoxed.’

This is from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth in the series. Mr Weasley and Harry are in the Ministry of Magic, and Harry is being enlightened about the danger of Regurgitating Toilets.

OOTP was, in my opinion, the beginning of the downfall of HP. It’s where JK swapped plot and humour for secrets and tying up loose ends. Arthur Weasley is one of my favourite characters – well, generally the entire Weasley family are.

I realised that the final Harry Potter book did not make itself onto my list of top moments last year. I think this is mostly due to being a painful experience as I shut myself in my room for two days to ensure the ending was not ruined. However, finally a huge part of my childhood came to a close and I could breathe knowing how things finished.

I will not tag anyone, but should if your reading this do take up the challenge!

Juno February 12, 2008

Last night, after stuffing myself at Nando’s (mmmm PeriPeri), myself and Chelle went to see Juno.

It has had a huge buzz around it for a very long time and I was cautious to not get carried away with the hype.

However…

What can I say, I loved every moment of this movie. Diablo Cody’s script is brilliant (if occassionaly flirting with the line of unbelievability….) and the cast shine throughout this film. Ellen Page is wonderful and I challenge you to not fall in love with the character by the first half an hour.

It is official: I am now in love with Michael Cera. He not only charmed me completely but has beautiful legs. Not too sure many people could work those shorts so well.

I knew it was a good film when, realising the silly grin I had on my face, I turned to Chelle to see she had exactly the same look. We both sat there smiling ridiculously for the length of the movie.

Even Jennifer Garner impressed me – and I usually can’t stand her.

The soundtrack is Indy heaven basically, but never took over from the film itself, and will be added to my CD collection very soon.

The Departed February 10, 2008

I finally finished this movie after starting it 2 months ago. Watching it downstairs proved to be a problem as I was interrupted by parents who claimed the TV (conviniently as Leo Dicaprio was stripping the shirt off a woman on her bed….)

I have not seen the original movie to know how good an adaptation this was, but I have to say how much I loved the ensemble cast. Leonardo Dicaprio and Matt Damon headed things up, though Jack Nicholson was pretty much the headline act (I swear he was wearing eye liner) whilst Martin Sheen, Marc Whalberg, Alec Baldwin and Ray Winstone (with a slightly dodgy accent) made sure that no minor part got looked over.

I enjoyed the film, though I need to watch it again as I’m pretty sure I missed many implied subplots. I also felt like the second half of the movie didn’t fit the first – the tone seemed to flip a bit. And it seems that Scorsese couldn’t resist a ‘Hollywood’ end scene, but never mind.

Super Bowl February 3, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Amy @ 3:08 pm

Today is Super Bowl XLII. It starts over here at 8pm when I’m working, and I can’t quite justify staying up till 4 in the morning (I have managed it once) to see the game through. Still, I’m excited. I love American Football, and love it even more since I learnt the rules a few months ago (before then I just cheered when everyone else did).

My team is Seattle Seahawks since they were the first team I watched play on TV (and I like their uniform?!?) but tonight I am cheering on the New England Patriots (it has England in the name….)

One highlight of the evening is the ads inbetween (which costs companies millions). Here is my favourite:

Some day (when I am not doing anything the following Monday) I plan to hold a Superbowl party and watch the game with others through the night. Until then, I shall rely on highlights the following day. Goodluck Patriots!!

Things I’ll be up to 2008 February 2, 2008

My intention here is not to brag, just to share all the really cool things I’m looking forward to for 2008.

England v South Africa Test

Finally, I am off to see my first England cricket match. Will be a test of mine and Chelle’s friendship (her being South African) as we travel to the Oval Cricket Ground in London. I just hope two things: 1. we win 2. we sit amongst the barmy army so Chelle will be forced to keep quiet!

Twenty20 Finals Day

Me and Chelle have managed to get tickets to this years finals day, with last year’s being one of the best days of my life. This time it’s down at the beautiful Hampshire ground. Also, suggestions for fancy dress for two females (nothing crude thank you) would be welcome.

Alton Towers

We’ve booked Bed and Breakfast and will spending 3 days away with our very fun family friends. I just hope my stomach can cope with the torment it shall be enduring through 3 days of whirling and swirling.

Soul Survivor

This year I am heading up a project to help groups across Colchester link up when taking their young people to this summer event. I’m very excited, as we will be doing an overnight event beforehand too. And of course, my trusty airbed shall ensure I get a good nights sleep (a luxury of being a leader don’t you know)

JNC

In September I shall (hopefully!) qualify as a youth worker. It will be the result of many a day staring at a computer screen. Just a small issue of a 3rd year and little thing called a dissertation to tackle afterwards…

Winchester

The annual family trip to visit my amazing Great Uncle in the most beautiful city I know of. Winchester is my second home, and you can guarantee staying with my Uncle will be full of adventures, good wine and scary foreign spirits (Grappa anyone?)
