So this evening I went to see Jumper, the new movie from director Doug Liman.
I had no expectations for this film following the slating it got from all those movie-boffs in my life (you know who you are….) so the only way was up.
Firstly, I enjoyed this movie. I did. I can not moan about spending money to see it. The action and effects in this movie are awesome, and pretty much carry the film. Liman has great vision to be able to link together all the shots and I never got tired of the ‘jumping’. The ‘drive’ through Tokyo was stunning.
Yup, it’s crazily short (1 hr and 20mins) and the plot is wonderfully shallow. Nothing is explained at all… nothing! The characters are given no depth and we are given no motives or information regarding the powers or rivalries of the opposing ‘teams’.
Jamie Bell was very good in this movie. His character added much needed spark and had the best lines. I would have loved to have seen more of him and to have known more about his character, and yet he is left behind due to the short plot and focus on Hayden Christensen, a very lacking lead character. And unfortunately, Samuel L Jackson is laughably terrible (with horrible hair) as the bad guy. We are never told why he is bad, except he seems to be really hung up about the jumpers, since he tells us many times how much he hates them.
The ending was the least subtle set up for a sequel I have seen! But again, I did enjoy this film. It just, you know, won’t change my life…
glad you went to see it mate i thought it was a fun film but didn’t go in with high expectations
And the world hangs its head in shame…
